Outline // What Lies Ahead #3: Peace of Mind

John 14:15-31

THE HOLY Spirit.  He’s HOLY.  Holiness is exclusionary. A central tenet of holiness is "being set apart" or separated.
Jesus's teaching about a "narrow gate" or "narrow way" suggests that salvation, and by extension holiness, is exclusive to those who follow a specific path.

What’s an advocate?
1. “works and argues in support of another's cause (especially in court)
2.  a person or group that defends or maintains a cause or proposal”

So our advocate is like an intelligent, informed helper! Like our lawyer in court!
The HS knows the law better than we do, and is ON OUR SIDE!!
So when the enemy comes against me, has accusations to throw at me…I get to say “Talk to my lawyer..”  “Send all accusations straight to my lawyer…here’s his address: John 14:16-17  Good luck with that…I got a really good lawyer! He’s the best!

God is self-evident. (anyone can see that He exists, Romans 1:20)
Jesus reveals Himself to those who accept Him, love Him and obey Him. (Not just fans, but followers, John 14:21)
The Holy Spirit is received when we’re looking for Him & recognizes Him. (John 14:17)

The HS's internal work:
  • ‘teaching,’ John 14:26, he will teach you everything
  • ‘reminding,’ John 14:26, and remind you of everything I have told you
  • ‘testifying,’John 15:26, He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me
  • ‘convinting,’ John 16:8, He will convict the world of it’s sin, and God’s righteousness, and the coming judgment
  • ‘guiding,’ John 16:13, He will guide you into all truth
  • ‘speaking,’ John 16:13, He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard.
  • ‘prophesying,’ John 16:13, He will tell you about the future

Peace is one of the fundamental characteristics of the messianic kingdom anticipated in the Old Testament..”peace on earth, goodwill toward men”  (Nu. 6:26; Ps. 29:11; Is. 9:6–7; 52:7; 54:13; 57:19; Ezk. 37:26; Hg. 2:9) and fulfilled in the New (Acts 10:36; Rom. 1:7; 5:1; 14:17)
