  • What is the foundation for the blessings: God’s work or our obedience?

  • These blessings begin and end with a “if-clause”. What is the importance of it?

  • How will God be glorified through the blessings? How is holiness inseparable from the promises? What is your responsibility with the blessings and their conditions?

  • How would you put verses 3-6 in modern, first-world, terms?

  • How is obedience itself a blessing? Where do you find it difficult to obey?

  • Then read it in context: 1 John 5:1-12

  • How are belief, love, obedience, and life interconnected in verses 1-4, and 10-13? Using these verses, how would you explain to someone what being a Christian is all about? Why the repeated emphasis on right doctrine, holiness, and love?

  • Using the “love test” of verse 1 (to love God is to show love to his children), how are you doing at loving God? Using the test from verses 2-3 (the love others means to obey God’s commands), how are you doing at loving others?
